Bulgaria, Germany & Greece Post Women's Goodwill Games Wins

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA - The classification rounds at the 2001 Goodwill Games started here Friday (August 31) with teams from Bulgaria, Germany and Greece posting elimination wins at the South Bank Piazza.

The 12th-seeded Yanchulova sisters (Lina and Petia) of Bulgaria eliminated 13th-seeded Teresa Galindo and Mayra Huerta of Mexico 23-25, 21-13 and 15-6 in 60 minutes in a match that kept the near-capacity crowd of 2,500 on the edge of their seats. The Bulgarians now plays 16th-seeded Chiaki Kusuhara and Ryoko Tokuno of Japan at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Japanese team was scheduled to play Eva Celbova and Sona Dosoudilova Friday, but the Czech Republic team withdrew from the competition due to Celbova's medical problem. Kusuhara and Tokuno opened play Wednesday by losing to top-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst 15-13 in the third and deciding set.

Tenth-seeded Vasso Karadassiou and Efi Sfyri of Greece eliminated local favorites 15th-seeded Angela Clarke and Kylie Gerlic of Australia with a 21-17, 19-21 and 16-14 in the 2001 Goodwill Games' longest match (61 minutes) through the first three days of competition.

Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau, the 11th-seeded team from Germany, advanced to a 6:30 p.m. meeting Saturday against the Greek team with a 21-19, 18-21 and 15-9 win in 54 minutes over 14th-seeded Rebekka Kadijk and Marrit Leenstra of the Netherlands.

The first two quarterfinal matches will be played Saturday on the South Bank Piazza sand. Eighth-seeded Daniela Gattelli and Lucilla Perrotta of Italy challenge Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst at 1 p.m. while fourth-seeded Tatiana Minello and Sandra Pires of Brazil play fifth-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak of the United States at 7:30 p.m. Thursday's winners will play Sunday for a spot in Monday's semi-finals.

The final two quarterfinals matches will be played Sunday. Second-seeded Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil, the defending Goodwill Games champions, seventh-seeded Zi Xiong and Rong Chi of China while third-seeded Barbra Fontana and Elaine Youngs of the United States plays sixth-seeded Daxilia Larrea Peraza and Tamara Fernandez Grosset of Cuba.

Winners of a record 26 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Gold Medals, Behar and Bede won the 1998 Goodwill Games Gold Medal in New York's Central Park by defeating Pauline Manser and Kerri Pottharst of Australia in the finals.

The Brazilians followed their New York title with Gold Medals at both the 1999 and 2001 World Championships. Behar and Bede earned the Silver Medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games after losing the final to Natalie Cook and Pottharst.

Fontana is making her second appearance in Brisbane after finishing fourth here in 1995 with Lori Forsythe in a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event. Fontana and Forsythe also won the Bronze Medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia. Arce and McPeak are competing in their second Goodwill Games as the pair won the Bronze Medal in New York.

The women's final matches are set for Tuesday when the final eight places will be determined. The Gold Medal winners will share the $30,000 first-place prize.
