Beach Bits:
• Akers was ranked in the top 20 in eight of her first nine seasons playing on the AVP Tour. • Twice Akers' partner has won an award; in 2002 she played with Jenny Pavley, who won the Most Improved Player, and in 2005 she played with Nicole Branagh, who was selected as the Rookie of the Year. • Akers organized a trip for four AVP players (herself and Hans Stolfus, Ty Loomis, and Jenn Snyder) to visit U.S. Army troops in Kosovo in the summer of 2007. The following year she went again with Jeff Nygaard, Ty Loomis and Brooke Hanson, traveling to Italy, Germany, and Kosovo.
2011: Akers teamed with Nicole Branagh for the first time internationally, and the first time since 2005, placing ninth in the FIVB season opener. 2010: Akers started the season by competing in her 100th career AVP event, and she and Turner advanced to the finals, the second in Akers' AVP career. The next month she and Turner won a silver medal in Seoul, marking the second FIVB final for Akers. The duo also won a bronze in The Hague. On the AVP Tour the duo played in six semifinals in seven events. 2009: Akers began her partnership with Tyra Turner, with the duo advancing to the semifinals in their first two AVP events, as well as their first FIVB tournament in Osaka. The Osaka event marked Akers' first FIVB main draw, and she and Turner won their first four matches en route to the semifinals. Their second FIVB event together was the World Championships, where they placed fifth after being eliminated by the eventual tournament winners. In Moscow and Marseille the duo likewise placed fifth while being ousted by the eventual winners. They advanced to a total of three semifinals on the AVP Tour, and four on the FIVB Tour, including the last three events of the season. 2008: Akers teamed up with Holly McPeak and had 12 tournaments finishing fifth or higher, including three semifinals. Akers ended as the 11th-ranked player on Tour, and participated in the individual event in Glendale. Ranked in the top 10 in several categories, including seventh in hitting percentage (.443) and 10th in both blocks per game (.74) and kills per game (6.79). 2007: Continued her partnership with Hanson, and in July the pair represented the U.S. at the Pan American Games in Brazil, where they finished fifth. Following that event, the duo advanced to three AVP semifinals, including her first championship match in Chicago. The duo finished the season with a third in Cincinnati and fourth in San Francisco in the last two team events. Placing fifth or better in seven events, the duo ended as the seventh ranked team on the Tour. Akers was third in hitting percentage (.473). 2006: Akers again played on the Australian pro tour prior to the AVP season, partnering with Branagh. Akers played on the AVP with three different partners, with a season best finish of ninth place with Heather Lowe as well as Brooke Hanson. Akers finished the year seventh on the AVP Tour in hitting percentage (.438). 2005: Prior to the season, Akers spent one month playing professionally in Australia, winning two events with Australian Olympian Kerri Pottharst. On the AVP Tour, Akers reunited with Pavley for the first three events, then finished the season with Nicole Branagh. Akers and Branagh had a best of seventh, and Akers completed her fifth straight season ranking in the top 20 on Tour. 2004: Akers played the first three events with Straton, then began playing with Rachel Wacholder. In their first event together, the duo placed third in Huntingon Beach, and had four fifth-place finishes on the year. Akers for the first time competed in the individual Best of the Beach event. She ended the season seventh in aces per game (.56). 2003: Switching partners to Sarah Straton, Akers equaled her best finish of fifth place twice. Akers and Straton were the ninth-ranked team on Tour and qualified for the season-ending invitational. 2002: In Akers' first pro beach event she failed to advance from the qualifier, the only time in her domestic history she had to play in a qualifier. Following that event she paired up with Jenny Pavley, and the duo notched two fifth-place finishes en route to qualifying for the eight-team invitational at the end of the season, where they again placed fifth. Akers was selected as AVP Rookie of the Year as she and Pavley finished as the tour's ninth-ranked team.
Hot Winter Nights: Played in three events in 2008, finishing second twice, in Rosemont and Bloomington. She won her first HWN event in 2009 in Grand Rapids, one of three events she played that season.
College: Formerly Angie Harris, she attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a BA in Sociology. She left as the all-time career ace and kills leader and was a three-time All-Conference and All-District player. She was also named Team MVP her senior year.
Personal: A natural athlete who enjoys working out and eating healthy, even when she's not in season - Akers is one of the Tour's most in-shape athletes. Her accomplishments off the court echo her healthy lifestyle and include completing the Boston Marathon in three hours and 23 minutes. She grew up in Ft. Wayne, Indiana with older sister Anne, and younger siblings Ali and Kevin. Akers currently resides in Redondo Beach, Calif. with her husband Jeremy, a former professional football player.
