Known in Brazil by his competitors as "The Wall", Ricardo began playing Beach Volleyball in 1994 and became a full-time participant on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in 1998. He has medaled twice in the Olympics, including a silver at the Sydney 2000 Games with Ze Marco de Melo and a gold at the Athens 2004 Games with Emanuel Rego. Ricardo and Emanuel also captured the 2003 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. Ricardo and Jose Loiola captured the 2001 Goodwill Games gold medal in Brisbane, Australia, after placing second in the 2001 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Klagenfurt, Australia. Through the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour season, Ricardo has posted a 575-140 match mark (80.4%) with five different partners. He has a 289-55 record with Emanuel (2002-2006), 200-55 with Ze Marco (1998-2000) and 80-24 with Loiola (2001-2002). Ricardo teamed with Emanuel to win the 2002, 2003 and 2006 Circuito Banco do Brasil season's points titles. Since starting their partnership at the end of the 2002 season, Emanuel and Ricardo have won the SWATCH point's title the past four seasons (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006). Ricardo won the Brazilian "King of the Beach" competition in 2003. He has been honored as the Circuito Banco do Brasil best player (2006), best attacker (2000 and 2004) and top blocker (1999-2001, 2003). Ricardo has two children (Pedro Henrique, 9, and Giulia, 3).
