Bio Bits

Beach Bits:
• Metzger was twice chosen as a partner in the finals of the individual event; by Mike Lambert in 2005 and Jake Gibb in 2008.
• In winning the 2007 title in Huntington Beach, Metzger and Lambert became the first team to lose their first round match but win the tournament.

2008: With Lambert injured, Metzger paired with Mark Williams. Playing in five semifinals, the duo won in Boulder for Williams' first career title. Metzger was fifth in hitting percentage (.458), ninth in kills per game (6.85) and 10th in digs per game (4.85). On the FIVB Tour, the duo played in seven events. After five ninth-place finishes, they placed second in a Grand Slam in Klagenfurt.
2007: Metzger and Lambert were in the semifinals in 12 of the 17 AVP team events, winning four titles. Metzger was the third ranked player on tour, and finished fourth in kills per game (7.34) and ninth in hitting percentage (.413). On the FIVB Tour they won one bronze medal in five tournaments.
2006: Formed a partnership with Mike Lambert, and the duo played in the semifinals in each of their first 14 AVP events, winning five times. Metzger was again the tour's top ranked player as well as finishing third in the individual event. He was third in kills per game (7.54) and ninth in digs per game (4.24). Internationally the pair won one bronze medal in five events.
2005: Began a new partnership with Jake Gibb, winning their first two events together. They won twice more during the year, including in Manhattan Beach. Metzger was the top ranked player on tour after he and Gibb played in the semifinals in 11 of 13 team events. He was second in hitting percentage (.452) and third in digs per game (5.19). Internationally the duo won a silver and two bronze medals.
2004: Metzger and Holdren played in just five AVP events, with one third place finish, as they focused on qualifying for the Olympics. The duo made one semifinal on the FIVB Tour, placing fourth. Seeded 12th, the duo placed fifth in the Athens Games. Metzger closed out the AVP season with a third place finish with Wong. He was third in hitting percentage (.465) and was ninth in both aces per game (.34) and kills per game (6.83).
2003: Played the first four events with Wong, with the last being a third place finish. Then he paired up with Dax Holdren with a best of ninth. Competed on the FIVB Tour with both partners, placing second in a Grand Slam event with Wong and second with Holdren in the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
2002: With Wong, played in three of the first four semifinals on the AVP, including one second place finish. Metzger ended as the ninth ranked player on tour. Internationally the duo won four medals in seven events, including claiming the title in Espinho.
2001: Formed a partnership with Kevin Wong, placing second in a BVA Tour stop to start the year. Then on the AVP they placed third before winning two events, including in Manhattan Beach. In the individual event in Las Vegas, Metzger finished third. Finished as the ninth ranked player on the FIVB Tour after playing in four semifinals. In Gstaad, in their fourth tournament together, the duo won four qualification matches then knocked off the top two seeded teams to win their first title. They won a bronze in the Goodwill Games in Australia.
2000: After three events with Ian Clark, teamed with Brent Doble, and the pair played in three consecutive semifinals. He placed fifth with Aaron Boss at a USA Volleyball stop, and twice played on the FIVB Tour, including a seventh with Todd Rogers.
1999: Played seven of eight events with Carlos Loss, with a best of second. Had one FIVB event with Adam Jewell.
1998: Began the season with Wayne Seligson, then partnered with Eduardo Bacil with a best of second. He also played a pair of FIVB events with Carl Henkel, with a best of 13th.
1997: In nine events with three partners, he placed ninth twice, with Sean Scott and Lee LeGrande.
1996: Made his pro beach volleyball debut in a Manhattan Beach qualifier with Mike Diehl.

College: Metzger was a three-time National Champion at UCLA where he earned All-American honors for three consecutive seasons, as well as the 1996 NCAA MVP and William G. Morgan Award for most outstanding player. He graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies.

Personal: Originally from Honolulu, Metzger grew up surfing and playing beach volleyball at the Outrigger Canoe Club. He played indoor volleyball at Punahou High along with Mike Lambert.

Olympics (one, 5th, 1-2 Pool, 1-1 Elimination, 2-3 Overall):
• Qualified for Athens 2004 Olympics as the number 12 seed with Dax Holdren. After finishing pool play with a 1-2 record, lost in the third round of bracket play to Switzerland's Patrick Heuscher/Stefan Kobel, finishing 5th.
