Dutchmen Mulder-De Kogel surprising quarterfinalist in Cadiz | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cadiz, Spain, 10 August 2002 - The fairytale story of the Dutch
players Sander Mulder and Richard de Kogel has not come to an end yet
at the FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball Spain Open here in Cadiz. The
Flying Dutchmen outplayed the Germans Julius Brink and Kjell Schneider
to reach the quarterfinal for the first time ever. Mulder-De Kogel even
wrote Beach Volleyball history for The Netherlands, by becoming the
first ever Dutch team to reach the fifth position or higher in any
FIVB World Tour event.
Mulder-De Kogel still cannot believe what is happening here in sunny Spain. The leaders of the Dutch National tour ranking have tried their luck in almost all FIVB World Tour events this year, but have never survived the qualification tournament. In their match-up against the equally surprising German squad, Mulder-De Kogel took advantage of the windy conditions on court two. As they play Beach Volleyball in The Netherlands, they are used to playing in the wind. This was one of the reasons the Dutch squad took the straight sets victory (21-10, 21-16). ¨We try to play with short and low sets,¨ 1996 Olympic participant Mulder explained. ¨This is what you have to do with this huge blowing wind. We also served very well, so our opponents had problems with their reception.´ Canadians Jody Holden-Conrad Leinemann are the quarterfinal opponents of Mulder-De Kogel. Holden-Leinemann defeated Guilherm Deulofeu-Olgier Molnier from France in two sets (21-13, 27-25). World Champions and holder of the Speedo Silver Shirts Mariano Baracetti-Martin Conde had absolutely no problem to reach the quarterfinal stage. The current favorite for the title here in Cadiz cruised over Luis Maia-Juao Brenha from Portugal (2-0: 21-15, 21-12) and face John Child and Mark Heese of Canada in the next round. ¨Last week in Klagenfurt we lost early in the tournament. Maybe this is our week now,¨ Conde said. The World Tour Spanish Open here in Cadiz is definitely not the event the Brazilian teams will have good memories from. After Ricardo-Loiola and Marcio Araujo-Benjamin (the two best teams from this South American country) went out in the preliminary pool phase and Roberto Lopes-Franco failed to make it through to the quarterfinals. The Brazilian qualifier was defeated by the Swiss brothers Paul and Martin Laciga in an exciting three setter (15-21, 21-17,15-11). Laciga-Laciga will face Bjorn Maaseide-Iver Horrem in the quarterfinal. The last Brazilian team left in the tournament, Emanuel-Tande, made it through to the ¨last eight¨, where they will face Cubans Alvarez-Rossell. Play continues on Saturday afternoon and evening, when all quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled. The final of the men's FIVB World Tour Spanish Open in Cadiz will be played at 1330 CET on Sunday.
