ASPEN, COLO - Colorado State University products Angela Knopf and Krista Swartzendruber won a pair of matches here Sunday (September 2) to capture their second sand doubles title in only two events together by winning the women's Open title at the 30th annual MotherLode Volleyball Classic.

In the men's Open, second-seeded Skyler Davis (26 from Irving, Tex.) and Brian Soldano (25 from Isle of Palms, S.C.) finished first among the 67 teams entered by defeating 33rd-seeded Bryan Gibson (31 from Birmingham, Ala.) and Keith Jones (38 from Nashville, Tenn.) twice Sunday. Davis and Soldano scored a 15-6 win over Gibson and Jones in the finals after advancing to title match with a 15-9 victory over championship rivals in the winner's bracket final match.

Seeded last in the 26-team women's Open field, Knopf (22 from Troutdale, Ore.) and Swartzendruber (23 from Glenwood Springs, Colo.) had to rally twice in the title match to defeat sixth-seeded Natalie Sime (31 from Denver, Colo.) and Dawn Tischauser (28 from Denver, Colo.) 18-16. Knopf and Swartzendruber rallied from a 10-8 deficit to take a 14-10 lead in the final.

Sime and Tischauser, the top team on the Colorado Professional Volleyball Tour, came back to lead 15-14 and 16-15 with three matches points. Knopf and Swartzendruber, who won their sand double debut last week in Colorado Springs, scored the last three points of the match. The pair netted the title on their eighth match point as Knopf's block and kill at the net finished the title match.

All six of Knopf and Swartzendruber's wins in the 2002 MotherLode were upset victories as the pair scored a 15-13 win over Sime (Nebraska Wesleyan graduate) and Tischauser (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) Sunday afternoon. Sime and Tischauser had to win three elimination matches to advance to the final, including a 11-4 win over fifth-seeded Julie McGarr (Houston, Tex.) and Samantha Meador (Houston, Tex.).

Knopf and Swartzendruber also advanced to the finals with a 15-5 win over McGarr and Meador, who play regularly on the pro beach circuits. Knopf finished her CSU career in 2001 as a first-team All-American while Swartzerndruber left the Rams in 2000 after starting for Tom Hilbert's women's volleyball team for three seasons.

Gibson and Jones posted six-straight match victories this weekend, including a 15-7 win Saturday over top-seeded Curtis Griffin (Boulder, Colo.) and Kyle Schultz (Denver, Colo.), before losing to Davis and Soldano Sunday morning. Gibson, who won the Coed Open division Friday with Wendy Martin (St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.), and Jones defeated 12th-seeded Rob Baily (Annandale, Va.) and Jason Robertson (Reston, Va.) 11-4 for a spot in the final.

Griffin, who won four MotherLode men's Open titles with Erik Moore (1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998) and Schultz placed 17th in the competition after being eliminated Monday morning by 15th-seeded Kevin Gregan (Washington, D. C.) and Tony Mazzullo (Washington, D. C.) 11-10.

Andrew Cavanaugh (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who won the MotherLode's men's masters title Saturday morning with Eric Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.), placed 13th in the men's Open title. After splitting their first two matches, Cavanaugh and Sean Fallowfield (Huntington Beach, Calif.) won three elimination matches before being ousted by 17th-seeded Brad Fowler (Edmond, Okla.) and Blake Newman (Oklahoma City, Okla.) 11-9. Fallowfield is a two-time MotherLode Open winner in 1986 (with Rudy Dvorak) and 1989 (with Roger Clark).

While the two Opens were being decided Monday afternoon on the Koch Lumber Yard sand, seven other class titles were decided in the morning on the Wagner Field grass in downtown Aspen. Champions of the Wagner Field divisions were Brad Collins (Orem, Utah)/Dave Merrill (Draper, Utah) in Men's AA, Kevin Kelliher (Monterey, Calif.)/Scott Ruston (Santa Monica, Calif.) in Men's A, Travis Burris (Dallas, Tex.)/Steve Schaedig (Dallas, Tex.) in Men's BB, Keith Abkes (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)/Chris Oquendo (Coraville, Iowa) in Men's B, Novelett Jensen (Blaine, Minn.)/Alana Kiehn (St. Paul, Minn.) in Women's A, Jill Parker (Lincoln, Neb.)/Lisa Reitsma (Lincoln, Neb.) in Women's BB and Victoria Bierly (Albuquerque, N. M.)/Adah Burke (Albuquerque, N. M.).

In Saturday's only finale, Anderson captured his sixth MotherLode Volleyball Classic men's masters title (37 and older class) in the past ninth years as the 45-year old commercial real estate salesman teamed with Cavanaugh to defeat Tom Pestolesi and Bill Stetson 15-9 in the finals.

With regular partner Kent Kitchel (Santa Cruz, Calif.) sidelined due to right knee surgery, Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) successfully defended his men's master title with Cavanaugh as the top-seeded team in the 36-team field won six-straight matches this weekend. Anderson and Kitchel won the MotherLode master's crowns in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The pair placed second in 1998 and third in 2000.

Four titles in the Coed divisions were decided Friday. The Coed Open crown was won by Jones and Martin by defeating Annette Gregg (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Dustin Townsend (Encinitas, Calif.) 15-11 in the finals. The Coed A championship was captured by Warren Furey (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Julie Kaulius (Aurora, Colo.), who defeated Dolton and Knopf 15-10 for the title.

The Coed BB title was won by Denny Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and Maria Stork (Kansas City, Mo.), who scored a 15-13 win over Cat and Randy Gibson (Novato, Calif.). The Coed B crown was netted by Allison Less (Davenport, Iowa) and Chris Zelvis (Glendale, Ariz.). The pair defeated April Eaton (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Dan Maki (Scottsdale, Ariz.) 15-11 in the finals.

The Colorado volleyball tradition started Thursday with competition in two men's senior divisions (45 and 50 and over) and the women's masters. The 30th MotherLode Volleyball Classic, which concludes Monday afternoon, attracted a record-tying 670 entries. The 2000 MotherLode set the mark with 670. The 2001 event had 661 entries for the 17 classes.

Top-seeded Jon Lee (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Don Shaw (Menlo Park, Calif.) won the men's 50 division for the second-straight year as second-seeded Bill Noon (Lawton, Okla.) and Ron Smith (Denver, Colo.) had to forfeit the title match due to Noon's right knee injury.

Thursday's title was Lee's (53 and volleyball coach at Santa Barbara's San Marcos High School) seventh Motherlode title. The 51-year old Shaw coached the Stanford women to four NCAA Division I titles in 16 years before becoming the Cardinal men's volleyball coach last season.

Top-seeded Jon Hastings (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Andy Shroeder (Concord, Calif.) successfully defended their men's 45 title by defeating second-seeded Bob Blackburn (Sedalia, Colo.) and Mike Fair (Culver City, Calif.) 15-9 for the title. The title was the second for Hastings (46 and publisher of VOLLEYBALL Magazine) and Schroeder (46 and salesman).).

Jackie Campbell (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ilga Celmins (Aptos, Calif.) captured the women's master's title by defeating Yolanda Munoz (Dallas, Tex.) and Shannon Smith (Dallas, Tex.) 15-8 in the title match. The top-seeded Campbell (38 and a planner for Santa Barbara County) and Celmins (37 and a chemical engineer) won their first MotherLode titles.
