TOP SEEDS AND OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALISTS MOVE ON IN AVP CROCS CUP SHOOTOUT SAN FRANCISCO PRESENTED BY FUZE BEVERAGE

Both May-Treanor and Walsh, a Bay Area native, and Dalhausser/Rogers sweep their first-round matches, will play quarterfinals Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 12, 2008) – Olympic gold medalists and top seeds Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers won their first-round matches Friday in the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout San Francisco presented by FUZE Beverage.

May-Treanor/Walsh beat eighth-seeded Carrie Dodd and Tatiana Minello, 21-16, 21-19, to move into the quarterfinals of the double-elimination tournament.

“I think it’s a great start,” said Walsh, a Bay Area native and Stanford all-American. “But obviously we need to keep stepping up our game every single match because the competition gets tougher and tougher.”

May-Treanor/Walsh play fourth-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Davis/Johnson Jordan are as well-equipped to upset May-Treanor/Walsh as anyone. Not only did they win last weekend in Santa Barbara, they ended the infamous 89-match winning streak in 2004.

Dalhausser/Rogers unceremoniously put away ninth-seeded Pedro Brazao and Jose Loiola, 21-8, 21-14. They play 10th-seeded John Mayer and Jeff Nygaard at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

One of the day’s biggest upsets came from 11th-seeded Jennifer Fopma and Brittany Hochevar, knocking off sixth-seeded Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder, 21-15, 33-31. They then took second-seeded Nicole Branagh,, of Orinda, Calif., and Elaine Youngs to three games before losing, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12, to fall into the contenders’ bracket. A relatively new pairing, Fopma and Hochevar first partnered in Boulder the beginning of July and have since put together a seventh-place and two ninth-place finishes to make this penultimate leg of the Crocs Cup Shootout.

With the win, Branagh/Youngs moved into the quarterfinals

Third-seeded Beijing Olympians Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal also moved on to the quarterfinals and also took three games to do it – Gibb/Rosenthal beat sixth-seeded Matt Olson and Kevin Wong, 19-21, 21-18, 15-10.

The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout San Francisco presented by FUZE Beverage continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday until approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday, play starts at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s final at 2:45 a.m. and the women’s to follow at approximately 4 p.m. Tickets are available by logging onto www.avp.com, sfgiants.com or by phone at 1-800-225-2277.
