TOP SEEDS AND OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALISTS GO UNDEFEATED TO MAKE THE SEMIFINALS OF THE AVP CROCS CUP SHOOTOUT SAN FRANCISCO PRESENTED BY FUZE BEVERAGE

No. 2 and 3 seeds met in both men’s and women’s quarterfinals, with Beijing alumni moving on in both matches

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 13, 2008) – Top seeds and Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers moved through the second-round of the AVP San Francisco presented by FUZE Beverage, part of the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light, unscathed Saturday, both winning in two games to make Sunday’s semifinals.

In their only match of the day, May-Treanor and Walsh, a native of nearby Saratoga and a four-time, first-team all-American at Stanford, beat fourth seeds and last week’s champions Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-17, 21-16. They’ll play at 12:50 p.m. Sunday against third-seeded Jen Boss and April Ross, a rematch of last week’s semifinal that Boss/Ross won.

Dalhausser/Rogers also moved through Saturday play into Sunday, beating 10th-seeded John Hyden and Brad Keenan, 22-20, 21-12. They’ll play at 11:15 a.m. Sunday against fifth-seeded Stein Metzger and Mark Williams.

In the bottom half of both the men’s and women’s winners’ brackets, the No. 2 and 3 seeds met Saturday afternoon.

In both cases, Beijing alumni prevailed, putting all four Olympic teams in the semifinals. Second-seeded Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs beat Boss/Ross, 21-11, 21-19, to move into the semifinals; third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal beat Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, 21-19, 21-19.

The Cinderella story of the Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light continues to be 11th-seeded Braidy Allen and Billy Halverson, who upset ninth-seeded Pedro Brazao and Jose Loiola, 21-14, 21-18, in the first round of the contenders’ bracket Saturday. They went on to lose to Metzger/Williams, 21-14, 23-21, and finish seventh. However, that finish earned Allen/Halverson, who had been qualifiers until earlier this year, a spot among the eight automatic seeds next week in Manhattan Beach, absolving them of the world’s largest qualifier in which 24 teams earn a spot in the main draw.

The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout San Francisco presented by FUZE Beverage continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday until approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday, play starts at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s final at 2:45 a.m. and the women’s to follow at approximately 4 p.m. Tickets are available by logging onto www.avp.com, sfgiants.com or by phone at 1-800-225-2277.
