SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 14, 2008) – Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won the AVP San Francisco presented by FUZE Beverage, part of the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Sunday. It’s their first win in three tournaments since Beijing. Top-seeded May-Treanor and Walsh, a Saratoga native and four-time, first-team all-American at Stanford, beat second-seeded Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, 21-16, 21-12 in the final at San Francisco’s Pier 30/32. Since the Olympics, May-Treanor and Walsh had had their 112-match and 19-tournament winning streaks snapped by Branagh and Youngs in Mason, Ohio Labor Day weekend and lost again last week in Santa Barbara, Calif. to Jen Boss and April Ross in the semifinals. For the men, third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal upset gold medalists and top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, 11-21, 21-19, 15-13. Gibb and Rosenthal, the other American men’s team in Beijing, had lost nine straight finals against Rogers and Dalhausser before winning the last two. The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light concludes next week in the storied sands of Manhattan Beach. The world’s largest qualifier will put 24 teams in the main draw; those 24 will join the eight already qualified via the Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light to play for a $1 million purse, the largest ever offered in beach volleyball. Fans of the AVP Crocs Tour are encouraged to donate their worn-out Crocs to SolesUnitedSM - a first-of-its-kind recycled footwear donation program from Crocs, Inc., dedicated to providing new quality footwear to people in need worldwide. Used Crocs™ shoes will be collected at every AVP Crocs Tour stop and participating retail locations, after which the Crocs™ shoes are cleaned, ground into new material and made into new recycled shoes. To date, Crocs has donated over one million pairs of shoes. In 2008, the goal is to donate 2 million pairs of recycled shoes to those in need.
