OPEN QUALIFIER KICKS OFF HISTORIC AVP CROCS CUP SHOOTOUT PRESENTED BY BUD LIGHT MANHATTAN BEACH OPEN
 
Main Draw Competition To Start 9 a.m. Friday; Top Seeds And Gold Medalists To Play In First Matches Of The Day

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – September 18, 2008 – Beach volleyball’s most prestigious and historic stop, the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open, kicked off with an open qualifier Wednesday and Thursday. Seasoned veterans and newcomers alike spiked their way into Friday’s Main Draw to face off against the most elite professional beach volleyball players in the world.

Twenty-four teams qualified into both the men’s and women’s tournaments, completing 32-team main draw fields for each gender. Teams qualifying include AVP Crocs Tour San Diego champions Tyra Turner/Rachel Wacholder and South Bay residents as well as AVP Crocs and fellow San Diego champions Casey Jennings/Matt Fuerbringer. Wacholder/Turner are seeded seventh, while Fuerbringer/Jennings are seeded sixth. The complete list of qualifiers can be found at the end of this release.

AVP Crocs Tour veterans Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby, ranked 31st in the qualifier, joined forces and upset 15th-seeds Canyon Ceman/Jonathan Acosta to advance to the main draw. This weekend will be Ceman’s last on the AVP Crocs Tour.

Those who have qualified into the main draw of the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open have a chance at the largest purse in the sport’s history: one million dollars, with winners splitting $100,000. Top seeds and Olympic gold medalists Kerri Walsh/Misty May-Treanor and Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers, as well as fellow AVP Crocs Tour stars Elaine Youngs/Nicole Branagh, Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal and Manhattan Beach native Holly McPeak were all placed directly into Friday’s main draw via their performance in the three qualifying Shootout tournaments (Cincinnati, Santa Barbara and San Francisco). Both sets of gold medalists will take to the sand at 9 a.m. Friday for their opening-round matches.

The weekend’s beach party atmosphere will be enhanced with a celebrity match to benefit Stand Up to Cancer, hosted by Amanda Beard. The match will take place Sunday before the men’s finals. Additionally, the Cuervo Black Air Guitar World Champion will put on a special performance for fans, Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open is taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the South Side of the Manhattan Beach Pier in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Women’s finals will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, while the men will finish up at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. General admission tickets are free to the public, courtside seating starts at $40.
