MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2008) - Top seed and Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh moved on undefeated to Saturday’s quarterfinals of the $1 million AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open Friday. May-Treanor and Walsh defeated 32nd-seeded Dana Kabashima and Vladia Vignato, 21-8, 21-9 in the first round and then advanced to the 2nd round via 17th-seeded Michelle More and Suzanne Stonebarger via forfeit in the second round, finally defeating eighth-seeded Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana, 21-16, 21-14. The second-round forfeit may make a difference tomorrow afternoon, as the women’s final is at 1:30 p.m., prompting an accelerated tournament pace Friday and Saturday relative to any of the events the duo’s played in the last two months. “It’s huge,” Walsh said. “We always want to play because it helps you get your mojo, your rhythm. That being said, this is deep sand, and you have to save your legs.” This weekend, they’re playing in a $1 million event - the largest purse ever in beach volleyball - on the birthplace of beach volleyball where the winners are immortalized by a plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier - May-Treanor and Walsh have three. “We want to win this tournament really badly,” Walsh said. May-Treanor and Walsh play at 8 a.m. Saturday. Men’s gold medalists and top seeds Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers unceremoniously moved into Saturday’s third round, beating 32nd-seeded Matt Heagy and Eric Leeseberg, 21-11, 21-15, and 16th-seeded Mike Morrison and Ty Tramblie, 21-16, 21-16. Rogers/Dalhausser will play at 9 a.m. Saturday. The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Manhattan Beach Open is taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the South Side of the Manhattan Beach Pier in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Women’s finals will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, while the men will finish up at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. General admission tickets are free to the public, courtside seating starts at $40.
