10,000!

Chesapeake, Virginia – June 3, 2009 – The Beach Volleyball Database reached an historic milestone today when Daniela Funkhauser of Austria became the 10,000th player listed. The database, which is the largest repository of two-person professional beach volleyball information in the world and is used by the FIVB, CEV, and AVP professional tours, was started in 1999 and has grown over its ten-year history to include 2100 tournaments and 53,000 matches -- 10,000 with full statistics, and links to over 8900 news articles.

Here is a breakdown of how the database has grown over the years:

Player's information includes over 6300 birthdates, 6500 hometowns or residences, 4600 heights, and 2700 photographs from 100 different photographers. The players, from Scott Aanonson to Falk Zimmermann hail from 109 different countries, from Andorra to the Virgin Islands.

There have been many contributors who helped to get the site started including Tim Simmons who sent his entire collection of Volleyball and Volleyball Monthly magazines, various WPVA and AVP yearbooks and saw the vision of what it could become, Chris Marlowe and Joe Jarres who did countless research on the early years (1948-1982), and Artie Couvillon who authored the Sands of Times series. Over the years many more have helped keep it going including financial support from the AVP (thanks Al Lau) and cooperation from the FIVB and CEV, tireless efforts to enter data and player bios from my good friends and constant encouragers Tim Simmons, Dominic Clark, Doug Strauss and the AVP stats crew (Heather Chandler, Jessica Kahn, Curtis Snyder, Sandy Snyder, Linda Poncin, Jenifer Scheibler, Mimi Strauss, Bonnie Apol, et. al.), and many photographers including Ken Delgado, John Gelderman, Stan Liu, John Bartelt, Holly Stein, Raymond Wardenær, Mauro De Sanctis, Paolo Amari, and Mauricio Kaye just to name a few. A special thanks goes to my wife of 20 years, Lisa, my daughter Liz and son Dennis who put up with the countless hours that I spend staring at the computer. The list is large, so please forgive me if I missed anyone.

Look for bigger and better things from BVBInfo.com in the years to come including a new site design which includes enhanced player pages, tournament results, and statistics, more match data from the early years of the AVP and FIVB, and data from other professional tours.

Finally, thank you to all the players who have made the game great and to all the fans who keep visiting the site and sending suggestions and words of appreciation. Here's looking forward to the next 10 years and 10,000 players.
