FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships U-18, presented by Swatch, to be hosted by Thailand

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 20, 2003 - Thailand will be the host country for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships U-18, presented by Swatch, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced on Thursday.

The tournament will be held at the Cha-am Beach resort in Thailand from August 27-31, 2003 and will be a unique opportunity for the next generation of players to pit their skills against their peer group at world championship level.

On March 12, the FIVB announced that the Beach Volleyball World Championships U-21 had been awarded to France and Thursday's announcement about the Under-18 category completes arrangements for these important annual junior championships, considered by the FIVB as the essential breeding ground for the next generation of top players.

They can then go on to contest the Swatch-FIVB World Tour with its four Grand Slams, and the bi-annual Senior Beach Volleyball World Championship, this year be hosted by Brazil on the fabulous Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro.

The Under-18 event is to be staged in cooperation with promoter Pentangle Promotions and will comprise 16 teams per gender (a total of 32 teams). The competition will comprise one day of qualification, followed by four days of the main draw tournament.

NOTE: Players interested in competing at either of the two Junior Beach Volleyball World Championships should contact their National Federations for more information
