Beach Bits:
• In getting to his first ever championship match, in Atlanta in 2008, Medel eliminated Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, the only AVP event in 2008 the Gold Medalists did not play in the finals. • Midway through the 2006 season he teamed with Fred Souza, and their six tournaments resulted in his six best career finishes to that point.
2008: Medel and Souza played in four semifinals, including two championship matches. Kicked off the season with a third-place finish in Miami, and played in the finals in Atlanta and Boulder. Medel played with Casey Patterson in Manhattan Beach, and he finished as the 11th-ranked player for the second straight season. He was sixth in kills per game (7.03) and eighth in aces per game (.54). 2007: Continued his partnership with Souza, and they ended as the fifth ranked team on tour, finishing below ninth just once. Medel made his first semifinal in Seaside Heights after winning five straight consolation matches, then in Manhattan Beach finished third after defeating two of the top three seeded teams. They also placed third in Boston. Medel was fourth in aces per game (.65). 2006: Started the year with a pair of events with Jeff Carlucci, then reunited with Torsone for six tournaments. Played the rest of the year with Fred Souza, getting two fifths in their six events together, including their first outing as well as in Manhattan Beach. Medel ended as the 24th-ranked player on tour, and was fifth in aces per game (.65). 2005: Formed a partnership with Ty Loomis, getting a best of ninth in nine events. In Huntington Beach the pair eliminated the previous tournament winners, Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, en route to their ninth-place finish. Medel was third in aces per game (.73) and 10th in kills per game (7.23). 2004: Began the season with four events with Moran, getting a best of ninth place. In the final four tournaments he played with two different partners, placing 13th with Brad Torsone. 2003: Played six of his seven events with Moran, advancing from the qualifier five times with a best of 17th. 2002: Competed in five tournaments alongside three different partners with a best of 17th with both Moran and Colin Wellman. 2001: Partnered with John Moran for seven events, including three main draws, with a best of 13th. 2000: Played three qualifiers with three different partners, but did not make the main draw in any of them. 1999: Made his pro beach volleyball debut in Louisville with Andrew Vazquez, finishing 21st.
Hot Winter Nights: Medel competed in three HWN events in 2008, finishing second in St. Louis and Kansas City. In 2009 he played twice, finishing second in Minneapolis.
College: Medel lead Golden West to a second place finish in the state in 1999-2000, ranking #1 in kills and aces, and notching First Team All-Conference selection. He was also an Orange County Athlete of the Week in 2000 for the Rustlers.
Personal: Medel grew up playing volleyball in Santa Barbara under the tutelage of his High School Coach Jon Lee. He has been competing on the beach since he was 14 years old, and won his first tournament at 16. During his time at San Marcos High, he helped the Royals grab two Channel League Championships and three CIF appearances with a fourth place finish his senior year, earning him All-Channel League honors. Medel is currently finishing his teaching credentials at Long Beach State and coaches for Joy Fuerbringer's Club Mizuno Long Beach.
