Olympics: Sander competed in both the 2016 Olympics (bronze medal) and 2020 Olympics (10th place) indoors.
College: Sander was an outside hitter at Brigham Young, where he was a three-time First Team AVCA All-American and once a Second Team AVCA All-American. In 2014 he was chosen as the AVCA Player of the Year., and was a two-time conference player of the Year as well as two-time conference tournament MVP. Sander left the program as the all time leader in rally-scoring era in kills (1,743) and service aces (182). His 55 aces in 2014 set the program's single season mark, and his nine aces in a match was an all-time best at the school.
Personal: Sander has a younger brother, Brenden, who played volleyball at BYU and was an alternate for the 2020 Olympic Team, and a sister, Britney. Sander was the 2007 AAU Beach Volleyball Player of the Year. In 2015 he married Rachel McQuivey, who in 2014 had the longest long jump of any BYU athlete during the outdoor season. They have a son (Atli, born in 2018) and a daughter (Isla, born in 2021),
