Peterson was Academic all-SEC all four years, and helped them to the NCAA Tournament her junior season. She left Tennessee ranked in the top 10 in career digs. Peterson graduated with a BA in English and American Studies. She began playing beach volleyball at age 25 in a co-ed 4's league after work.
