Gerling began at Golden West Junior College, leading her team to an undefeated season and a state championship in 2003. She then played two seasons at Indiana, where she was academic all-Big 10 both seasons. She double majored in studio art and art history.
One of three children, Gerling earned all-CIF honors three years in soccer and track. She was the CIF Soccer MVP in 2002 as well as being a two-time team MVP. In addition to playing volleyball in high school, she was also on the swim team. She was selected as the school's Athlete of the Year in addition to being the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
