Sanderson has been representing Australia in Volleyball at International level for 15 years. After a successful indoor volleyball career, including a four-year stint at Pepperdine University in the United States, Sanderson pursued Beach Volleyball starting with the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour in 1998.
Sanderson’s bid for a berth in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games was ended in June 2000 when knee injuries forced her out of the running. After having both knees reconstructed in an 11 month period, she took 18 months off until rediscovering her passion for the game in 2002. The obvious disappointment of not being able to achieve her dream in Sydney only strengthened her resolve to win in Athens in 2004. Sanderson qualified for the Athens 2004 Olympics with Natalie Cook, but both players were hampered by shoulder problems as they dropped their final two matches to place fourth. "My dream is, and always has been to win an Olympic gold medal," said Sanderson.
Sanderson and Cook, who captured the 2004 Australian National Championships, played in only five SWATCH-FIVB World Tour events in 2005 as shoulder problems continued to plague both players.
