McVey began her collegiate career at Illinois Central College. She then played two volleyball for two years at King's College in Pennsylvania, where she was a 2003 AVCA Division III Honorable Mention All-American. Her two years there resulted in her having two of the top three kill totals for a season in program history. She left ranked fifth in career digs (1,156) and seventh in career kills despite playing just two years. McVey as a junior set the school mark for a single season in both digs and aces, then broke her own record in both categories as a senior.
